New Poll: Pennsylvania District 30 Republican Primary

On October 3-4, 2005, a survey was conducted among registered Republicans residing in Pennsylvania’s 30th Legislative District who had voted in three of the past four elections (primary and general) and stated they were likely to vote in the upcoming Republican primary election for State Senate.

Support for State Senator Robert Jubelirer is eroding among likely voters in his own party.  Data collected by this poll revealed a growing dissatisfaction with State Senator Robert Jubelirer among his most politically active Republican constituents.  Over the course of just three-months , the 30-year incumbent lost a full one-third of his support, as those holding a positive opinion of him plummeted from 75% to 50%.  Negative views of Jubelirer more than doubled, moving from 18% in June to 40% in October.

Jubelirer and his presumed challenger in the Republican primary election, Blair County Commissioner John Eichelberger, enjoyed widespread name recognition among District 30 Republican voters. While Jubelirer’s name was more familiar than Eichelberger’s (97%-83%), the two garnered nearly identical favorability ratings: 50% held a positive opinion of Jubelirer and 49% of Eichelberger.  Furthermore, respondents who felt unfavorably towards Jubelirer outnumbered those with a negative opinion of Eichelberger by more than 2.5-to-1 (40%-15%).
